Know your rights
General information for families in San Dimas and the surrounding 50 miles. This is not legal advice and it does not create an attorney-client relationship.
If you are stopped
- You have the right to remain silent. You do not have to answer questions about where you were born or how you entered the country.
- You have the right to speak to a lawyer before you sign anything.
- Do not sign a document you do not understand. Signing can waive a hearing.
- You may ask if you are free to leave. If the officer says yes, leave calmly.
If someone comes to your door
- You do not have to open the door unless the officer shows a warrant signed by a judge, with your correct address.
- An ICE administrative warrant is not a judge's warrant. Ask them to slide it under the door or hold it to a window.
- Say that you do not consent to a search.
